A summary of our policies and professional standards
Intro
David Keys Sustainable Woodworking is a sole-trader practice delivering workshops and programmes for the public, councils and community organisations. This page summarises the standards I work to. Full policies and bespoke risk assessments can be provided on request.
Safeguarding and child protection
I’m committed to creating a safe, respectful environment for everyone I work with — especially children, young people and adults at risk. I follow Northern Ireland safeguarding guidance and good practice, including the principles set out in Co-operating to Safeguard Children and Young People in Northern Ireland and the SafeguardingNI procedures.
How safeguarding works in practice
- Sessions are planned with clear supervision arrangements, appropriate ratios and agreed responsibilities (especially when working with under-18s).
- I use clear boundaries and conduct: respectful language, appropriate contact, and no bullying, harassment or discrimination.
- Where programmes involve work that meets the definition of regulated activity, I will meet the commissioning body’s requirements for AccessNI enhanced disclosure (as applicable) and provide evidence where required.
- Any safeguarding concern will be taken seriously, recorded appropriately, and shared with the relevant safeguarding contact/agency in line with NI procedures.
Reporting a concern
If you have a concern during a session, please speak to me immediately.

Accessibility, dignity and inclusion
Workshops are designed to be welcoming and workable for different people — a calm pace, clear demonstrations, and plenty of time to ask questions. You’re welcome to work seated, take breaks, and go at your own speed.
If there’s anything you’d like me to know in advance (mobility, vision/hearing, sensory needs, anxiety, etc.), just share a note when booking so the day feels straightforward and comfortable.
Health and safety
Safety is built into how sessions are run:
- tools and materials are introduced with a clear safety brief
- appropriate PPE is used where needed (e.g. eye protection, dust control depending on activity)
- workstations are set up to be stable and uncluttered
- I prepare risk assessments appropriate to the activity and venue, and I’ll share these with commissioning bodies on request.
First aid: A first aid kit will be available
Insurance: Copies of our public or product liability insurance can be provided on request.
Photography and media
Sometimes photos help celebrate the work and communicate the value of making together. I take a respectful approach:
- For public workshops: I will ask for permission before taking or sharing identifiable images.
- For commissioned groups (including children/young people): photography arrangements and consent will be agreed with the commissioning organisation in advance.
- No one is required to be photographed to take part.
Privacy notice (UK GDPR)
I only collect the information I need to run workshops and respond to enquiries. I aim to keep it safe, use it fairly, and explain it clearly.
What I collect

- Booking information (event booked, ticket type)
- Any info you choose to share to help delivery (e.g. access needs)
Why I use it (lawful basis)
- To respond to enquiries and organise sessions
- To deliver bookings and take payments
- To send updates/marketing only where you’ve opted in
- Photos are only used with permission
How long I keep it
I keep information only as long as necessary for delivery, accounting and safeguarding, then delete or anonymise it.
